Petr Šabach (b. 1951). After high school graduation studied the theory of culture at the Charles University in Prague, then worked in various places – among others as an educationalist in the cultural centre and as a night watchman in the St. George Monastery in Prague. Since 2001 Sabach completely devotes his life to literature; he teaches creative writing in Josef Skvorecky literary academy. Lives in a quiet Prage neighbourhood, Dejvice. Published in various literary periodicals and magazines – Mladá fronta, Kmen, Tvorba. Sabach’s works inspired one of the most famous Czech film directors, Jan Hrebejk, to make films famous both in the country and abroad: “Šakalí léta” (“Big Beat”), “Pelíšky” (“Cosy Dens”) i “Pupendo.” Sabach debuted in 1986 with a short story collection “Jak potopit Austrálii” (“How to Flood Australia”). He’s famous for his characteristic style and amazing sense of humour. He favours the literary form of short stories which are the most popular among Sabach’s works. To prove how popular is the writer in his native country, one should read the opinion of a Polish journalist, Mariusz Szczygieł: “Every Czech knows who is Petr Šabach. I think every Czech has read his works and if he hasn’t, he has surely seen a film based on his stories”. He was a guest of the 2011 edition of the festival.
