Marek Vadas is a Slovak writer born in Košice in 1971. A regular visitor to equatorial Africa, he has become an adviser to the king of Nyenjei, a small kingdom in Cameroon. He is the author of a novel, “Malý roman” (A Little Novel, 1994), several collections of short stories, including “Prečo sa smrtka smeje” (Why the Grim Reaper Laughs, 2003), “Liečiteľ” (The Healer, 2006), and “Čierne na čiernom” (Black on Black, 2013), as well as a book of African fairytales for children and “Útek” (The Escape). His fiction combines traditional African narrative forms with European modernism. Vadas’s books have been translated into Czech, Ukrainian, German, Polish, Hungarian, Spanish, South Korean; Slovene and Chinese translations are underway. In 2007 his collection “The Healer” received the Anasoft Litera prize, Slovakia’s most prestigious literary award.
